                                               boulders and old wooden pilings.
Soil Obstructions:               The soft, sandy, silty clay layer was giving Millgard some troublebecause they were not
                                                keeping viscosities up. Obstructions beingencountered are boulders, wooden pilings and
                                                old granite seawall.

Excavations:                         35 caissons, 3,4,6, and 9 ft. dia., avg depth 135’. Deepest 145’ (9’ dia). 18 of these piles
                                                were done in the Fort Point Channel with diameters of 4’-9’. Also: 100-150 feet of trenches,
                                                which have adepth of 23’ right along the Fort Point Channel. Cashman excavated these
                                                trenches.
Equipment:                           1 Crane attachment
Soil Conditions:                   Fill, soil mixed materials, clay, glacial till and rock. 18 of the caissons were in the Fort Point
                                                Channel (seawater). All were completed without problems. Approximately 15 drilled
                                                shafts excavated from a barge.
Soil Obstructions:                Site next to Fort Point Channel. Tidal effects, very permeable/flowing till layer and seawater.
                                                Stablized by the use of LA-1 and in some extreme cases the InstaFreeze system was
                                                utilized.

Excavations:                        Crosswalls35K square feet of diaphragm walls, average length is35’ and depth is 60’. 3K
                                               square feet of sensitive walls. There are four panels right along the foundation of the Mass.
                                               Highway Building, which is about 20 stories high. Four of these panels are complete with no
                                               problems.

Soil Obstructions:               The pre-trenching and the guidewalls did not match up so the top 20’ was all loose, sandy
                                               topsoil which was the elevation as the water table. This project is located next to the Fort
                                               Point Channel in Boston so the soils and water were brackish.

Excavations:                        500K square feet of diaphragm walls
Equipment:                          2 clamshells, 1 hydrocutter
Soil Conditions:                  Fill, clay, glacial till and rock, cross conductivity of sea water. Many of the walls were
                                               constructed within a few meters of active railtracks at North Station.
Soil Obstructions:               Various layers of cohesionless sands, clean layers of clam and oyster shells, old sea wall,
                                               brick and rubble were encountered. The KobbleBlok, SandSeal and InstaFreeze Systems
                                               were used to stabilize these layers. Other obstructions were mainly wood and steel piles,
                                               boulders, old sewer lines and utility lines.
