Cove Point LNG Terminal Expansion

Kiewit Foundations Group reached out to KB International in spring 2015 for help on its Cove Point LNG Export project in Lusby, Maryland. The contractor had been tasked with installing more than 400 drilled shafts.

Drilling conditions were extremely difficult due to the presence of liquefiable sand, fossilized seashells, and marine clay. KB utilized several different fluid loss additives to eliminate fluid loss and limit concrete overbreaks to roughly two percent on each pile. KB also assisted in the drilling and completion of the piles, which averaged 66 feet in depth.
